Acer netbooks gets HD support through Broadcom BCM70012 video accelerator.
One of the basic deficiencies in Intel based netbooks is the lack of HD playback support. This is because of the weak onboard GMA 950 which is not enough powerful to handle high quality 1080p movies. The Intel Atom processors equipped in most netbooks are also weak to handle HD media playback. The result is that HD content is not watchable on most netbooks.
One option is to use Nvidia's Ion platform, which supports HD media playback through the onboard Geforce 9400M GPU. But it comes at a higher price than the conventional Intel based systems and decreases battery life.
The newly released Broadcom BCM70012 can be attached to a netbook through a mini PCI-e card and supports full HD 1080p hardware decoding. This puts less strain on the CPU; all while playing HD media easily. This new solution was tested on Acer Aspire One series netbook and it worked flawlessly. Its low price is a big advantage, as well as power draw of only 1 W under full load, making it ideal for low cost and energy efficient netbooks.
