Asus is the first company to give USB 3.0 support with P6X58 motherboard. The USB 3.0 standard was finalized earlier this month
It is expected that motherboards supporting USB 3.0 will start appearing by the end of 2009.
The new premium series motherboard is going to use 2 USB 3.0 superspeed ports. The motherboard also has support for Intel Core i7 based processors, six DDR3 slots supporting up to 12 GB of RAM, 3 PCI Express slots and also support for new SATA 3.0 port which supports 6Gb/sec transfer rate. The USB 3.0 standard support transfer rates of upto 4.8 Gb/sec. This is achieved through extra data lines which produces sustained data transfer. However, earlier due to lack of super speed USB controllers, it was not possible to embed these devices on the motherboards.
This high data transfer rate of 600 MB/sec will be beneficial when transferring data to high capacity portable media such as SSDs and high capacity Flash Drives, especially HD media. Asus has yet to announce the release data and pricing, and no benchmarks have been carried out till yet. However, due to lack of available USB 3.0 devices, this port might not be usable for now.
