NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 Spotted

November 26, 2005 at 06:56:00 AM, by Thai Tan Rating: 3 out of 5

NVIDIA\'s next 7-series mobile GPU looks to be a low end, entry level part; but one that stands to offer a lot of value.

When NVIDIA released the GeForce Go 7800GTX, it was met with much fanfare and excitement. The Go 7300 won't have quite the same fanfare, but it does look to bring a lot of promising features to the table. The problem with a lot of integrated graphics solutions these days is lack of full feature support, poor video acceleration, and a general sapping of system performance. While the Go 7300 won't set any world performance records, the inclusion of current generation video card technology in the baseline notebook GPU is definitely something to look forward to.

These specifications put the Go 7300 in competition with ATI's Mobility Radeon X300, but the Go 7300 should easily win in power consumption and physical size. The MR X300 is a 110nm part, lending itself to less power efficiency and a larger die size. Both parts are Direct X 9.0 compliant, but the Go 7300 is specifically 9.0c ready while we couldn't find the same spec for the MR X300. However, we believe the X300 will lead in performance due to its wider memory bus. The Go 7300 has some nice clocks which will help it keep up, but traditionally the memory data bus width has a large impact on performance; especially if we see the Go 7300's in TurboCache (i.e. shared memory) configurations.

While performance may not be the Go 7300's strong point, it will offer full Windows Vista graphics compatibility, lower power consumption, and NVIDIA's PureVideo video acceleration. We should all of this in budget and non-gaming notebooks at a reasonable price with less power consumption than previous generations.

ATI is rumored to have their next mobile part launched very soon, causing us to reserve final judgment for then; but for now NVIDIA has a certain lead in mobile graphics.

Tech words explained

"Desktop Replacement (DTR)"
This is the most powerful type of laptop. DTR’s are usually more expensive ($1500+), have a large screen (15” to 17”), and offer performance equal to or greater than that of a desktop computer. These high-end machines are also usually heavy (7lbs-12lbs) and have below average battery performance.
