Laptops using LED backlight in 2007
Apple and Hewlett-Packard are expected to sell laptops using LED backlight starting in the second quarter of 2007.
HP's LED-based laptops will run on Windows Vista operating system and will be targeted towards high-end, multimedia usage.
However, Taiwan LED makers will not be major beneficiaries according to industry sources. This means, major notebook companies will not order from Taiwan LED makers due to high requirements such as a brightness of over 1,680 nits and Taiwan has yet to offer such brightness level.

Makers like Nichia from Japan and Cree from the U.S. will offer the high specifications required by the notebook makers.
LED (Light-emitting diode) backlighting allows for the LCD display to be slimmer and consumes less power compared to conventional Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light (CCFL) backlighting found in most modern laptop displays. Even though white LEDs are built inside the bottom edges of the LCD panel, the entire screen is evenly lit. LED is also responsible in delivering more realistic red and green colors so images appear truer.
For more information on LED, the Sony VAIO SZ reviewed by Laptop Logic uses LED backlight technology.
