Based on Santa Rosa and slated to be named the Latitude XT
Dell finally sees a market for Tablet PCs with launch of Santa Rosa Mobile platform and Windows Vista!
Earlier this year, we reported a Dell Tablet PC was under works and set for Q3 2007 release. It's turning out to be that way. Although, there is no official word from Dell on this regard, some new details surface on Dell's first attempt of a Tablet PC.
The first design of Tablet PC from Dell would be named Latitude XT. Initial reports suggest that, the XT will have a 12.1-inch widescreen form-factor and feature Santa Rosa mobile technology. The tablet format used is the convertible. Convertible form is a notebook computer with a screen that can be twisted around to create a touchscreen slate. The convertible format is quite recent. All three form factors (slate, convertible and hybrid) have been fighting in a small market, and it is clearer now that convertible is the right format with future prospects to become industry standard.

Eric Greffier, Dell's EMEA director of client marketing, suggested that the inherent tablet PC support and enhanced handwriting recognition included with Windows Vista made the form factor more attractive, as users would in the past have had the added cost of buying the Tablet PC Edition of Windows XP. "We wanted to wait for Vista and the Santa Rosa (Centrino Pro) ultra-low voltage platform," he added, suggesting that the new platform's enhanced power management made it possible to "have enough brightness at the LCD level" to make the tablet usable outdoors without overly compromising battery life.
More details are expected later this year. Stay tuned to LaptopLogic to see what comes out of Dell's Tablet PC.
