Analysts: Apple's Laptop Sales Growing Faster than the Rest

August 30, 2007 at 05:02:00 AM, by Sourabh Kalantri Rating: 0 out of 5

One in six laptops sold in US is Apple\'s MacBook or MacBook Pro.

Findings of the New York-based market research firm, NPD Group, reveals that Apple's notebook range attract a lot of buyers and the number is only rising.

Stephen Baker, an analyst at Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD Group Inc, says "Apple's definitely up. Their sales are continuing to grow faster than the rest of the marketplace."

NPD group collected its data primarily from retail sources and excluded most online and direct sales. The group reveals that MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks accounted for 17.6% of June's unit sales - an uptick of more than three percentage points from May's 14.3%. Baker attributed the jump in market share to refreshes that both laptop lines recently received. The lower-priced MacBook was updated in mid-May with faster processors and more memory, while 15-inch models of the high-end MacBook Pro were outfitted with new backlit LED screens in early June.

This market share increase pushed Apple past Gateway Inc. into third place on NPD's list of laptop sales leaders, behind Hewlett-Packard Co. and Toshiba Corp. Apple in at the third spot now in terms of sales in US - 5.6% of total US notebook sales, far behind market leaders HP (28.4%) and Dell (23.6%).

Back-to-school sales during this month and next should be strong for Apple. But expects Apple's market share to remain more or less stable at the current figures this quarter.

Tech words explained

"Cache Memory"
Type of memory that is very close to the CPU, and usually built into the CPU. Cache does not contain large amounts of data, but it is very easy for the CPU to access it quickly. Due to the nature of programs, small amounts of cache memory can provide drastic performance increases. All CPUs have an L1 (level one) cache, and most of an integrated L2 (level two) cache. L1 cache provides the quickest access, and L2 cache has slower access but can store more data.
