Sensitive to even complex multi-touch gestures, slimmer and possibly with scanner function.
The latest developments make it possible to extend its usage in UMPCs, Ultra-portables and Digicams.
Sharp revealed a new LCD system equipped with an ultra-sensitive touch screen. In this new multi-touch LCD panel, each pixel carries an optical sensor. This eliminates the need to place film over the panel, meaning better image quality than existing touch-screen designs.

This allows the screen to respond to touch in multiple points and function as a scanner too. The technology can also be applied to portable digital devices, which might be used by business users to scan in business cards or for authenticating fingerprints.
This prototype is similar to the current LCD featured in the iPhone - 3.5-inch in size with 320x480 resolution. Due to the latest developments, Sharp could make this display as slim as just 1mm. The same technology will make it possible to make LCD screens up to 12.1-inch in size. So, these LCD panels could be perfect for a range of paraphernalia like smartphones, digicams, UMPCs and ultra-portable notebooks.
