Linux-based Google Chrome OS will free to use and expected to be released for netbooks by the second half of 2010.
Nine months after the release of Chrome web browser, Google has announced a new operating sytem which goes by the same name - Google Chrome Operating System. It's still under development and is an "extension" of Google Chrome web browser. It will be lightweight and open-source, targeted at netbooks primarily.
Google's Chrome OS will be available for both x86 and ARM processors. It's intended to be fast, secure & simple running on top of a Linux kernel.
The Google Chrome OS is a completely new project and should not be confused with Android. Although the latter was also designed for netbooks, Google Chrome OS is designed to run computers ranging from netbooks to full-size desktop systems. Google admits that there are certain areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap.
Availability:
Google Chrome OS will be available to use at no cost. Many OEMs and device manufacturers are already working with Google to support the new OS including Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, HP, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Toshiba. First machines to run Google Chrome OS will be netbooks released in second half of 2010.
