HDD, Optical Disc Drive Shortages to Continue

The supply of optical drives and hard disc drives for notebooks will be continue to be limited through 3Q2009, industry sources say.
Digitimes is reporting that both optical drives and HDDs will remain in tight supply for the upcoming quarter. For the optical drives, this is largely due to a shortage of pick-up heads (PUHs). The reason cited for this is the new focus on Blu-ray Disc PUHs since they're more profitable. For the HDDs, the reason is a little nicer sounding - the demand for notebook drives has grown faster than anticipated, and manufacturers are still catching up. However, both of these are problems that could impact the revenues of laptop manufacturers as they struggle to produce laptops that, you know, have optical drives and HDDs.
Much of the harm has come to less popular notebook vendors, since the big guys like Dell, HP and Acer continue to get top priority.
