Second-generation 1TB Desktars, 7K1000.B and E7K1000, up to 43% more power efficient than their first generation predecessors.

Hitachi has just announced their new second-generation 1 Terabyte hard drives, the 7K1000.B and E7K1000, claimed them to be the world's most power efficient 1TB HDDs.

The new three-platter design helps to improve idle power consumption up to 43 percent over its 1TB predecessors. Increased protection against data loss and piracy is provided via Bulk Data Encryption (BDE) which is available as an optional feature to users. Hitachi is also shipping the Deskstar E7K1000, designed to provide high-capacity storage for low-duty-cycle, 24x7 applications.

The latest additions to the Desktar family of HDDs will be available in capacities of - 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, 500GB, 640GB, 750GB, and of course, 1TB. Each of them will feature standard SATA 3GB/s interface with 7200RPM spin speed. The revolutionary PMR technique is obviously used to pack in nearly 375GB per platter.

Pricing & Availability:

Hitachi will ship the Deskstar 7K1000.B and Deskstar E7K1000 later this month. The pricing hasn't been revealed so far.
