Kingston releases mighty 256 GB Flash Drive

July 21, 2009 at 09:30:01 AM, by Jesper Berg Rating: 0 out of 5

Kingston has announced the world's highest capacity 256 GB Flash Drive.

The flash drive is the highest capacity drive for the Kingston 300 series. This new flash drive offers the same capacity as portable hard drives but only thumb sized.

According to Kristy Miller, Product Marketing Manager, Kingston Technology: "The DataTraveler 300 will enable users to carry huge volumes of data with them everywhere they go – up to 365 CDs for example. That’s one album for every day of the year, and it demonstrates how far flash technology has developed," “Business users and consumers can also safeguard their data by initializing the Password Traveler software which will allow them to password protect their data in a privacy zone without the need of administrator rights.”

Specifications:
  • Data Transfer rates: 20 MB / sec read and 10MB / sec write
  • Password security software for Windows
  • Durable capless design
  • Operating Temperatures: 32° to 140° F (0° to 60° C)

The flash drive is enhanced for Windows Vista ReadyBoost. The thumb sized flash drive with such a large capacity represents a breakthrough in the flash based media. The prices are however too high at $900, where it surpasses the prices of equally spaced SSDs, but as technology progresses, the prices are bound to come down.
