HP, ASUS to lead the charge with software "backing" from Microsoft.
Popularily of devices like the iPhone is making the laptop brands rethink about multi-touch technology. Given that Microsoft's next installment of Windows OS willl include features to take advantage of multi-touch capabilities, laptop manufacturers can smell the market for multi-touch enabled laptops.
According to reports, HP is planning to release a touch panel laptop with multi-touch technology by the end of 2008. The company already has a multi-touch enabled All-in-one PC lineup under their TouchSmart branding. Tablet PCs continue to be a niche market though.
HP is not the only outfit investing in applications of multi-touch technology to laptops. ASUS is likely to give a similar multi-touch treatment to select mainstream notebooks and Eee PC lineup. Fujitsu is also working on multi-touch tablets which are scheduled for release in 2009.
