New Core-i7 Powered HP Pavilion dv8 Entertainment Notebook Officially Priced in UK

October 14, 2009 at 03:10:33 PM, by Daniel Shain Rating: 0 out of 5

The new HP Pavilion dv8 packs some excellent features into its sizable frame, and should be an excellent candidate for watching movies. It comes with power, but that power doesn't come cheap.

The Pavilion dv8, which we first heard about a few weeks ago, has officially been priced on HP's UK site. The impressive specs include a Core-i7 CPU, 4GB RAM (max of 8GB), twin 320GB HDDs and a 1GB NVidia GeForce GT230 GPU. There will be an integrated TV tuner and Blu-ray to support your multimedia needs. Additionally, the notebook will feature an integrated webcam, fingerprint reader, 802.11n, Bluetooth, HDMI/VGA, 4USB + 1USB/eSATA, FireWire, ExpressCard, and a multicard reader.

This approximately 9lb laptop will run Windows 7 and sport an 18.4" display with a full 1920x1080 HD resolution. Of note, HP's Long Life battery comes standard, which promises a noticeable increase in battery performance versus standard Li-Ion setups.

The cost in the UK will be £1,300. There is no word yet on a US price, but that would be over $2000.

Tech words explained

"Ultraportable"
This is the smallest and lightest version of the laptop. The overall focus of this laptop is having a light weight (less than 5lb), around 1" thick or less, with 9" to 12" displays. Due to the cost of making components smaller and fitting them into tighter spaces, the price is usually more expensive, ranging from $1000 for a very basic machine to $2000+ for mid-range features. Although the Ultraportable has respectable standard performance, it is usually inadequate for any graphics-intensive programs, due to the common use of Integrated Graphics. Ultraportables usually have longer battery life (~5+ hours) due to the common usage of lower voltage processors. Other than the smaller screen and integrated graphics, the other major tradeoff usually found with Ultraportables is a lack of an optical drive. These are usually not built into the laptop to save space and weight, but instead are often provided as an external option. Ultraportables are intended for highly mobile users who need basic computing power with ultimate portability.
