Samsung's 256GB SSD Doubles Performance

November 20, 2008 at 08:11:42 AM, by Sourabh Kalantri Rating: 4 out of 5

Mass production of 256GB Samsung solid state drive in now underway.

We've known about the existence of certain 256GB SSD from the Samsung camp but we've just learnt that these babies will soon be available for those who can afford them.

The new 256GB SSD doubles the performance of Ssamsung's existing 64GB and 128GB SSDs. To give you numbers, the sequential read speed and sequential write speeds are 220MB/s and 200MB/s respectively. It's obviously faster than even the best 7,200RPM laptop HDDs if these numbers are to be believe. Samsung says that having a 256GB SSD in your laptop is like having a 15,00RPM drive without its size, noise, clutter and heating drawbacks.

The drive consumers 1.1W of power and is similar in weight to a 128GB SSD (81 grams). The 2.5-inch multi-level cell (MLC) 256GB SSD retains the standard 9.5 millimeter (mm) drive thickness.

Still no word on pricing or a official launch date of any sort but when they do ship, they will offer optional proprietary encryption programming that provides full disk encryption.

I like your article but wish you had a few more details to report about it. You mention "soon be available for those who can afford them." Then you end your article with "Still no word on pricing." Your boogaloo is not offering the prices of their smaller/previous product -- 128GB SSDs -- and giving your SWAG on a price range for the 256GB SSD. This will give me and the other readers a ball park idea how deep this product will dip into our wallets.
