Western Digital Releases New 2.5-inch 640GB Drive

The new HDD contribution from WD measures up 2.5" with a standard 9.5mm-height, perfectly suited for high capacity laptops.

The HDD is called the Scorpio Blue 640 and, in addition to the small form factor mentioned above, is also rated by WD to eat up around 30% less power than their previous generation Scorpio Blue. This reduction in power should help increase battery life in the laptops in which its installed.

The HDD is 5400RPM, which is faster than some of the slower 4200RPM drives out there, but may result in a performance decrease if you're used to a nicer 7200RPM drive. The drive features speeds of SATA 3 Gb/s and has an 8 MB cache. The cost for these new drives is $149.
