35 Free High-Quality Games for Linux
February 09, 2009 at 08:02:49 AM, by Blair Mathis
Gaming on Linux has always been a relatively non-existent activity. For the longest time, it was nearly impossible to find any games that would run on Linux, let alone popular 3D games. As the operating system has grown and morphed, however, this is slowly changing, with more companies releasing their online games with Linux support (Americas Army) and 3D games being created specifically for it (Urban Terror). Here is a list of 35 high-quality, well-working games that will run smoothly on Linux:
First-Person Shooting Games
Savage: The Battle for NewerthSavage (picture in title) is an in-depth Real-Time Strategy game if you want it to be, but it can also be played as a first person combat game and, perhaps the most fun of all, a first-person shooter.
LegendsPlay with others online, Legends is a 3D shooter game where you play as a robot and set out to kill the other team.
Enemy TerritoryIf you're looking for a high-quality, in-depth first person shooter game with excellent graphics and a plot to match, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is the game for you.
Americas ArmyAmerica's Army is a game that will feel similar to Call of Duty, and that can be played with other players online. You start in bootcamp, and then specialize in a field (sniper, for example) and then move out on your missions while working like a real soldier would.
SauerbratenPreviously known as Cube, and often called Cube 2, Sauerbraten features a smooth, high-quality playing cube and a wide selection of futuristic, Halo-esque guns. You can play others online, play by yourself, or setup a network amongst your friends.
NexuizThis game is simply cool. Your player wears a suit similar to the Chief's in Halo, you shoot awesome futuristic guns, and you play in a wide-range of visually appealing levels.
TremulousA popular game, Tremulous has a grunge-look (hence the reason some complain about it being too visually dark) to it and an imaginative system of baddies to shoot. The graphics are smooth and commercial-like, and many think it's a copy of Natural Selection.
Alien ArenaIf you're just looking for a fast-paced, fun, jump-in-with-both-feet deathmatch game, Alien Arena will not disappoint.
Scorched 3DA copy of the classic game Scorched Earth, Scorched 3D is a game where you must use your skills, tactics, and judgment to outsmart your enemies while working your way through the 3D landscapes.
World of PadmanWorld of Padman isn't an FPS like you'd imagine. It is very much a cartoon world, where your characters look kinda like superheroes and you shoot creative cartoon guns. Hard to explain, Padman is a game best experienced.
TrueCombat: EliteThis game is a reshake of Enemy Territory listed above, and in my opinion, it is better. It appears just like a commercial game, with high-quality visuals, sound, and game play. You jump into the game as either a Count Terrorist agent for GIF626 or as a mercenary from The Unit. GIF626 works with many groups--ONI, Delta Force, SAS, Special Forces, while The Unit has enough funding and passion to give GIF626 a thorough run for their money.
WarsowA game that is often unfairly left from free game's lists, Warsow is a fast-paced FPS often compared to Unreal Tournament. This isn't a slow, tactical, take-your-time game, so if you're ready to move fast and play hard, install Warsow and start shooting.
Urban TerrorOkay, lets say you like to shoot people, to chat onscreen, and to play sniper. However, you don't want a storyline to follow, levels to go through, or other junk to mess with. In that case, Urban Terror will suck you in and waste hours of your time. Simply choose a game type (last man, flag, etc), join a server, choose your main gun/secondary gun/hand weapon, and then shoot everyone you can on the opposite team.
Open ArenaHave you ever played an FPS as a furry? If that question intrigues you, then by all means, download Open Arena. With a huge selection of characters to choose from and some awesome guns, you'll have a blast. Note: this game is violent and contains content offensive to some--the official website suggests that it may not be appropriate for kids under 17 years old.
AssaultCubeAssault Cube is based on the Cube, and focuses on teamwork. It is fast-paced and designed to look realistic. The best way to get a feel for the game is to check out their YouTube video, which you can watch HERE.
MMORPG
Regnum OnlineIf you're an MMORPG lover, Regnum online just might be what you're looking for. Free, with a visually appealing landscape, support for English, German, and Spanish, you set out to defend your realm from others who may try to take it from you.
PlaneShiftA 3D fantasy MMORPG, PlaneShift's website immediately makes you think WoW. The game has an extensive story, with races, history, government, and economy. Create a character and enter this fantastical world.
Driving Games
TorcsTorcs is an Open Car Simulator game. Race against AI or use it as a normal racing game.
BZFlagBZFlag is a popular game. You're in a tank, you have a gun, and you have to get a flag. If that doesn't sound like hours of awesomeness, then I don't know what does.
VDriftSimilar to Torcs-- VDrift is a racing simulator, and the site says it was made with drift racing in mind.
Extreme Tux RacerAn update to Tux Racer, where you play as a penguin and race down icy paths on your stomach.
ManiaDrivePerhaps the most fun to play, ManiaDrive is a LAN racing game that also features a story mode, boasts many maps, and has several different cars to choose from.
Ultimate StuntsAn upcoming game that is being greatly welcomed, Ultimate Stunts isn't quite finished, but is certainly playable. When you see the first screenshots, you'll think Pole Position for the next generation.
Strategy and Arcade Games
Open Transport TycoonDo you enjoy building up businesses, making design and location decisions, and watching your hard effort be returned monetarily? If so, Open Transport Tycoon is an excellent game for you.
The Battle for WesnothThis a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme, according to the official website. You'll build up your own army of fantasy creatures (elves, drawves, etc.) and beat the life out of any armies that oppose you, all while trying to reclaim the throne of Wesnoth (or any of the other storylines you choose to follow).
Globulation 2Globulation 2 is a real-time strategy game, where the player micro-manages his/her team.
Armagetron PingusTouted as a Lemmings-like game, it has 22 levels where you guide a group of animals.
NeverballTest your skills by rolling a ball through a moving maze.
KMahjonggIt's a high-quality Mahjongg game.
Frets on FireTest your finger speed with this free game.

Deadly Rooms of DeathDROD is a strategy action games that pits you against both the game and other players, requiring strong puzzle-solving skills and a lot of patience.

Sorry. A good man would prefer to be defeated than to defeat injustice by evil means. I am from Marshall and , too, and now am writing in English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "the altair company overwrites of the types of the intel 8080 needed out onto the instability." Thank you very much :p. Nadia.

@Jason Bourne - My comment isn't rediculous it's taken from my experience of friends who run Linux and it always is "something" that's stopping them to do what everyone else can.
Jason Bourne at 20:19, February 09, 2009
@Andrew - What a ridiculous comment. Actually, what's weird is that you were interested enough in GNU/Linux to click on the link to come to this very informative page, only to leave such a ridiculously stupid comment. Are you getting paid to spread the B.S. that you're trolling?
Andrew at 20:01, February 09, 2009
It's weird you have the time to play games with all the problems linux has. :-P

You could also checkout these titles(to name a few): Assault Cube - http://assault.cubers.net Teeworlds - http://www.teeworlds.com Or if you're willing to pay about $15, you can purchase the game "Prey" from Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Prey-Pc/dp/B000BHQZAQ then install it natively using the script from Ryan Gordon at icculus.org. Congratulations on your Freedom and switching to GNU/Linux!! Shannon VanWagner http://humans-enabled.com

Great list, there are plenty of games I haven't heard of before... More reasons to move to Ubuntu.
