CES 2009 Day 1

January 09, 2009 at 12:01:09 AM, by Travis Simon Rating: 5 out of 5

We're covering CES in Las Vegas - day one covers South Hall 1-4, enjoy the pics! We'll report more on these later.

CES 2009 - Day One Recap

Asus Bamboo

Announced last year at the CES event, we finally see a fruition in the development and release of the Asus Bamboo Series notebook - almost Netbook.

Specs run in line with the S101 configuration, but with a whole "slew" of matching sets to go along with it - offering as a matching case, mouse, and other accessories to go along with your eco-ego.

Asus "Fold" Concept

Interesting concept - the thought is that this is a workstation based laptop, that when in proximity to another "shared" station, they will fold flat and make one large display, and utilize all their components in a pair - including battery if need be!

Asus S101

This is the flagship fashion statement - small in size, comparable in current netbook offerings, but will feature some impressive possibilities for SSD options

Asus VX5

Ahh, the performance and raw power of the Lamborghini VX series from Asus never dissapoints - here's the latest VX interation at numeral value 5...

And sports the brand spanking new NVidia GT 130M graphics chip running in at 1.7gb worth of VRAM! Check out that core speed - should be definately in lines of the 17% reported increase of the 9600M

HP DV2

A subnotebook that offers decent size and sports the brand new "Neo" chipset from AMD, making it portable yet plenty powerful enough for the sub-notebook market...at least, in theory.

Lenovo Y550 Glossy vs Y650 Matte

Here's the Y550 finish (glossy) versus the new Y650 matte finish.

Lenovo Y650 Layout

This - is almost an honor - a 16.4" widescreen laptop that is very MBP like...we like it.

Lenovo Y Series Size Comparison

From the 14 - to the 16.4"...you can see that the largest one of the bunch...is the thinnest. Nice!

Logitech USB Gaming Headset

Logitech just released this new USB gaming headset, pretty fully featured and we'll get more information soon as we can load up the CD and get the images for you! While the wait is on...check out the goofy picture of your favorite Managing Editor...

MSI X320

Oooh, another stab at the inventors of innovation - MSI taking on the MBA? No specs offered, in fact, no working model available to be handled...behind glass only...and then one stuck to a podium...we'll try to get some more info on it.

That pretty much covers South Hall items, we'll have some videos posted of the other latest and greatest stuff, check back tomorrow as we cover the rest of the Halls!

Tech words explained

"Ultraportable"
This is the smallest and lightest version of the laptop. The overall focus of this laptop is having a light weight (less than 5lb), around 1" thick or less, with 9" to 12" displays. Due to the cost of making components smaller and fitting them into tighter spaces, the price is usually more expensive, ranging from $1000 for a very basic machine to $2000+ for mid-range features. Although the Ultraportable has respectable standard performance, it is usually inadequate for any graphics-intensive programs, due to the common use of Integrated Graphics. Ultraportables usually have longer battery life (~5+ hours) due to the common usage of lower voltage processors. Other than the smaller screen and integrated graphics, the other major tradeoff usually found with Ultraportables is a lack of an optical drive. These are usually not built into the laptop to save space and weight, but instead are often provided as an external option. Ultraportables are intended for highly mobile users who need basic computing power with ultimate portability.
