A few looks at the coverage for Day 2 of the CES show in Las Vegas
CES 2009 Coverage
The coverage for day two was pretty interesting, showcasing products and software from companies such as Intel, Micrsoft, Motorola, Sony and a whole slew of large display manufacturers such as LG, Samsung, Panasonic and Sharp. The big push seems to be 3D 1080p content for the display manufacturers - even though we're not sure of the actual practicality of this technology, it is sort of entertaining.
Our first big hit for the second day was seeing what was up in the pmp developement - and the iriver booth was our first stop that we could see as we walked in. So in we walked...plus we wanted to see what they had up their sleeve as iriver has a bit of a following for solid products that have some inovative features for the price point. Shown on display were two mini-compu-pmps. That's what I'm calling them anyways, larger than your normal PMP, but smaller than a mini-computer.
Notice how the display is showing Asain characters, not sure if this is heading stateside but the D50N was an interesting concept - almost Nintendo DS shaped with much more robust feature set. Features include:
- 4.8” TFT LCD (WVGA 800 x 480) with full touch screen capability
- Full Browser
- Instant Messenger support
- 16GB NAND flash memory via microSD memory card slot
- Integrated FM radio
- Wi-Fi connectivity
- Voice recording capability
- Dictionary, photo viewer, vide and must playback
- USB 2.0 connectivity

Next we headed over to the microsoft booth to check out what they had to offer, a lot of zune stuff, plenty of software related Office stuff and of course a nice little showcase of the upcoming Windows 7.Featuring some pretty neat facelifts and updates to what Vista...should have been, it's looking to be the update we were hoping for. Check out our Video preview on whats going on for the GUI when we post it soon.
Up next was the Intel booth - which was showcasing the brand new mobile quad core, Intel specific SSD devices, and Tv+ Internet enabled devices to showcase on your hot new plasma you picked up for christmas.
And one seriously sweet "Minority Report" touch / interactive panel. This panel will also be showcased in our video section.
Samsung
We then moved onto the Samsung area which has some intense displays happening. There was almost TOO much display going on...and unfortunately, they didn't have any of the laptops / netbooks available for display. They did however showcase the new P3 PMP device, which continues on where the P2 left off. This time, it DOES go up to 16 or 32gb of storage space, has new haptic feedback, built in speaker and microphone, and the user controllable widget customization. Look for that device to hit the streets early Spring!
Sony
We then moved onto the Sony booth, where they were showcasing the latest announcment for their mini-laptop area, the P Series VAIO.
This thing is pretty much intense mobility strapped in a high resolution display. Functional? Pretty much - but don't expect it to be much more impressive than the current stock netbooks. It's running and 1.3ghz Intel Atom, packs 2gb of ram with Vista - the thing is, this ultra-compact pocket sized mini-computer will run you $900 for starters that is. The good news is, it is going to be bundled with Verizon connection built in, and will be able to be "rented" out for $10 a day, no extended contracts, just 24 hours of $10 wireless bliss. We like that idea when we're stuck in the middle of nowhere and need to visit laptopical.com to blog about it!
Check out the size of this to my Moto Q9C...it's a niche market segement, but if you gotta be conected and carry a laptop in your vest pocket, this might be your perfect ticket!
We've got a lot more coming up and we're working the floor, last up for tommorow will be the north hall, where plenty of items are ready for us to be picked over and showcased, check back soon!
