Unlock the iPhone for Free
As the nation observed the 6th anniversary of the tragedy that was 9/11, the iPhone Dev Team has released what everyone has been anticipating - a software unlock that will allow Apple's device to work on any GSM network around the world. Dubbed anySIM', this freely distributed software modifies the baseband firmware of the iPhone allowing it to accept any SIM card without having to remove any hardware components. While we have been teased of a (fee-based) software unlock solution from the now-defunct iPhoneSimFree , anySIM is the first software unlock solution that is available free to the masses for use.
As a subscriber to T-Mobile, I can 100% confirm that the iUnlock software does indeed work. I have been able to enjoy almost all the capabilities of the iPhone on the T-Mobile network. Setting up the software was very straightforward, if lengthy. Within 30 minutes, however, I was able to make and receive calls. The only things not working were the Visual Voicemail feature which is an AT&T exclusive feature, and the Youtube app. Otherwise, the unlock works very well without any noticeable side effects with the OS.

TheanySIM software unlock solution allows you to:
-Fully unlock the phone for use on any SIM-based GSM carrier
-Make/receive calls
-Send/receive text messages
-Restore resistant (As of now, up to firmware version 1.0.2)
-EDGE/GPRS data (Dependent on carrier's data/Internet setup and offerings)
-Access voicemail (Visual Voicemail does not work - AT&T exclusive feature)
Preparation
For those who now wish to unlock the iPhone, please advise that this method is not for beginners, and demands a lot of patience. The process is straightforward, but it isn't pretty. If you're not tech savvy or unfamiliar with network and programming lingo, it's best you find someone to help you unlock it or wait for an easier GUI-based install solution.
While anySIM doesn't require opening up the hardware, it does require some previous activation hackery and software setup prior to installing the software unlock. First, to bypass iTune's AT&T activation page, you need to hack activate the unit, tricking iTunes into think the phone has already been activated. Once activated, you can use the iPhone as a PDA and iPod only. To do this, iPhone must be jailbreaked' in order to access the phone's internal code. Jailbreaking opens up the phone's operating system so internal code can be written onto the device. From there on, the phone is open to customization. There are many different approaches to activate/jailbreak the phone and is dependent on whether you're running Windows or Mac OS X. You can find software and instructions online simply by searching This process can take up to 15 minutes. Page:1/1
