Netbooks, as they have been dubbed, are ultra-portable, compact notebook computers. These computers are designed specifically for on-the-go use, and primarily for surfing the web, hence the term ‘netbooks’.

Overview: $100 – $299

These computers are designed specifically for on-the-go use, and primarily for surfing the web, hence the term ‘netbooks’. Asus started the trend of tiny, cheap laptops in late 2007 with the release of their Eee 701 ultra-portable. Over the course of the past year, over two dozen companies have released their own versions of the netbook, with prices ranging from $100 to a hefty $1000+.

Below is a list of all the netbooks currently available in the US, Australia, and the UK. They are sorted by price range, with the basic specs detailed for each.

Price Range: $100 – $299

OLPC XO-1 – $100?

7.5″ display with a resolution of 1200 x 900 pixels. 433MHz AMD Geode LX-700 processor with 256MB of RAM. Runs Sugar OS Linux. Available with a 1GB SSD.

Elonex One – $200

10.2″ display. 1.6GHz VIA C7-M processor with 512MB of RAM. Runs Windows XP. Available with an 80GB HDD.

3K Razorbook 400 – $250

7″ display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. 400MHz 32-bit processor with 128-512MB of RAM. Runs Linux. Available with 1GB-4GB SSD.

Nohrtec Gecko – $299

7″ display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. 1GHz VIA C7-M processor with 256MB-1GB of RAM. Runs Linpus Linux Lite. Available with a 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB SSD or 40GB HDD.

Asus Eee PC 701 2G Surf – $299

7″ display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. 800MHz Intel Celeron M processor with 512MB DDR2 RAM. Runs Windows XP or Xandros Linux. Available with a 2GB SSD.

Asus Eee PC 900A – $299

8.9″ display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor with 1GB of DDR2 RAM. Runs Windows XP or Xandros Linux. Available with 8GB or 16GB SSD with 20GB of online storage.

Asus Eee PC 701 4GB – $299 – $399

7″ display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. 900MHz Intel Celeron M processor with 512MB DDR2 RAM. Runs Windows XP or Xandros Linux. Available with a 4GB SSD.

Everex Cloudbook 1200V – $299 – $450

7″ display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor with 512MB of RAM. Runs gOS Linux. Available with a 30GB HDD.
