Simple Style and Function with the HP Compaq 6730s - Short Review
The HP Compaq 6730s is a business notebook that is no-nonsense both on the outside and the inside. If HP Compaq has decided to go minimalist, the HP Compaq 6730s might have been the end product of it.
Design Aspect
The laptop is the standard Compaq matte black finish that hardly has any style to it. It is as basic as basic gets, with a simple black gloss trim that runs around the side of the screen as well as the keyboard. Sure, this might have been a business notebook but it would have also been nice to see a bit of edge to it - but it can be assumed that HP has been saving all their creative juices for their art-inspired line of laptops instead. The resolution of 1280x800 on the 15.4 inch screen provides great quality and a clean display.
Keyboard Brownie Points
As usual, HP Compaq produces a winner in terms of keyboard design for the HP Compaq 6730s. Just like in other laptop models, the keyboard has wide, even spacing and is quite responsive. There is hardly any keyboard flex though if you are a touch typist you will need to adjust to the flat keys found on the HP Compaq 6730s. Clicks are smooth and muted down without any annoying clacking sounds. The touchpad on the HP Compaq 6730s, however, could do with a bit of redesign. The keyboard real estate is quite spacious, so it is puzzling to note why the touchpad is too cramped up in the middle when there is enough space to widen it out. Using the touchpad reveals constant run-ins with the depressed edges of the surface. The mouse buttons also feel a bit plastic-y and runs quite the opposite with the keyboard in terms of styling and click sounds.
Shortcut Keys and Indicators
The HP Compaq 6730s comes with several shortcut buttons. There is one for the wireless LAN as well as the Bluetooth, located beside the power button. A lone indicator light sits on the far edge of the notebook to indicate hard drive activity. It is a bit hard to see this since it is placed far from normal eye view when working with the laptop in regular sitting mode, though.
Connectivity Options
In terms of connectivity, the HP Compaq 6730s comes with wireless 802.11n support, VGA out, Express Card/54 slot, and four USB ports – which is one USB port more compared to most laptops out on the market today. You might however need to buy a non-HP branded port replicator as this one does not come with a docking port.
Storage Components
The HP Compaq 6730s comes with a standard 160 GB 5400 RPM SATA HD. In actuality, you get around 137 GB worth of usable storage upon first powering it up on Windows XP. HP takes protection one notch higher thanks to the exclusive 3D DriveGuard technology which protects the hard drive from any shocks to ensure that your data is kept safe.
Conclusion
The HP Compaq 6730s is a no-nonsense basic business laptop which delivers when it should despite the snooze-worthy
design, its other features prove that for those who like to prioritize work over other things, it is a worthy companion
to have.
