Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook - Short Review
The successor to the astonishingly popular seven inch netbook, the Eee PC 701, the Asus Eee PC 900 is still quite “tote-able†for those who are really into the mobile computing world.
Easy on the Eyes - Literally
The Asus Eee PC 900 comes in a glossy white netbook finish similar to that of the 701 model. Aesthetically speaking, not much has been changed with this unit aside from the fact that it has got a bigger screen (8.9 inches, to be exact) to make your document-viewing tasks a lot easier on the eyes. Now, you no longer have to scroll sideways to view certain web pages as they easily fit on the screen. The unit is 6mm longer than the 701 series and this time the speakers are now found at the bottom of the laptop to make room for the 8.9 inch screen. Furthermore, non-mouse users will have an easier time with the multitouch trackpad, which was not present in the earlier model. The left and right cursor buttons are also easier to click this time, compared to the 701 which required several clicks to make a connection.
Memory
Storage will also depend on the kind of OS that you intend to have pre-installed on this unit. The one that comes with the Linux model has 20GB , while the one that comes with Windows XP operating system has a mere 12GB. Eyebrows might be raised at this discrepancy, but this is Asus’ way of keeping the price of the Linux and Windows-installed Eee PC 900 models within the same range.
Neglected Keyboard
The Asus Eee PC 900 may have improved in terms of its internal agenda, but the overall usability of the keyboard is
still an issue – much to the dismay of those with really big hands. It is still quite cramped despite obvious spacing on
the perimeter of the unit, and Asus might have wanted to adjust this aspect so that power users can be more comfortable
handling the unit.
What’s to Like:
• bigger screen
• Portability
• Multitouch trackpad
What’s Not to Like:
• Cramped keyboard (no improvements in this area)
• Small memory (but enough to install Windows on the Ubuntu unit)
• Short battery life (3 hours but actual tests indicates a little less than two hours)
Conclusion
The Asus Eee Pc 900 is a significant upgrade for those who were used to the seven inch model previously introduced by
the Taiwanese netbook maker. If you are not a power user who just needs a simple laptop you can tote around with you for
basic web surfing without squinting at the screen and typing documents, this netbook is a good choice.
