Short Review: Asus Eee PC 901 Netbook: Why it Rocks
After the seven inch 701 and the 8.9 inch 900 netbooks from Asus comes the Asus Eee PC 901 after mere months from the release of its predecessor. The most significant improvement in this model would be the new processor – from an Intel Celeron M to the more netbook-suited Atom CPU.
More to Love
Tinkering around with the netbook and using it to its limit reveals that it has several more things to love aside from the Atom processor. Battery life is one thing as well as several design tweaks that includes more responsive mouse buttons as well as quick launch buttons. Just like the Eee PC 900, the Asus Eee PC 901 can be purchased with Windows or Linux operating system. It also has a 12 GB SSD (that’s solid state drive for you) to work with – not too much, but an SSD is less prone to shakes and spills because it is soldered right on the inside of the computer and thus you have better protection against memory loss.
Strictly Speaking
If you want to get technical about it, the Asus Eee PC 901 is actually larger than the Eee PC 900 – but only by a margin. The unit comes in either glossy black or pearly white similar to the older models. In terms of dimensions, the entire netbook approximates the size of a paperback and is almost just as light – well, light enough for it not to completely weigh down your entire bag. The mouse buttons on the touchpad are now more distinct than ever, which is a great improvement over the previous model’s left and right rocker button. It has gesture controls (a feature that was first introduced in the Asus Eee PC 900) wherein you can pinch as well as unpinch images using your thumb and forefinger in order to zoom it in or out. You can also use your own fingers for vertical scrolling on web pages, too. The display is quite decent at 1024 x 600 pixels in native resolution – a very big improvement from the older 800 x 480 pixel resolution found in the old seven inch Eee PCs.
Pecking Motion
Just like the older models, the tiny keys on the Asus Eee PC 901 are still hard to use especially if you plan to work with the netbook for extended periods. However, there is a line of new buttons right above the keyboard which are quick launch buttons in order to turn on/off the display, selecting screen resolutions and padding back and forth between launching Skype and turning on the power saver mode.
Battery-wise, the new Asus Eee PC 901 emptied out after five hours and fifteen minutes using a battery drain test (with video playback). This is one of the best scores ever in battery life for any laptop across all categories. This is partly because of the energy-efficient Intel Atom CPU that comes with it and again because of the solid state hard drive. Additionally, the system also underclocks its CPU in an automatic manner once it recognizes that you are on battery power.
