CPU-Z 1.5

Published March 05, 2009 at 04:23:29 AM, by Jesper Berg

CPU-Z is a well-known tool among system builders and hardware geeks in general. It’s freeware and constitutes only a small downloadable zip file with an executable that can be run straight away without prior installation.

This makes it as clean as Windows software gets; it doesn’t copy additional dll’s or add registry values. It does include a configuration file (.ini) which is optional to use but provides added options to configure.

What CPU-Z Does

What it does is very straightforward but at the same time quite amazing (to a hardware geek) – it displays every detail about your hardware down to the serial numbers on your memory modules. Besides satisfying your curiosity there may be countless other reasons why you need to know the exact specifications of your current hardware, a few being when testing, tuning, or troubleshooting new or unknown hardware. It’s also extensively used by overclockers to verify and compare their settings.

Feature Set

The name implies that the program deals with the processor, and it does, but it has other uses as well. It provides detailed information about your motherboard, memory, and lets you view your current Windows and DirectX versions. New in version 1.5 of CPU-Z (from 1.49) is improved support for the new Phenom II processors from AMD, support for Nvidia’s 740i chipset and several other fixes.

CPU-Z 1.5 uses a small window with five tabs, each of them featuring information about your system; the CPU tab gives you all the available information about your processor, including model name, socket, stepping, manufacturing technology, voltage, clock speeds and much more.

Remember that if you use an Intel processor with SpeedStepping activated (dynamic frequency scaling) the clocks may display a lower number than the maximum clock speed. This feature is activated by default on most computers, and it definitely should be active on laptops as it saves power. However, if you disable the feature in the BIOS or put some load on the system the clock should increase to full speed.

On the mainboard tab you can view information about the system’s chipset and BIOS, including version and date of the current BIOS. There’s also information about the graphics interface and current link width.

The memory and SPD (Serial Presence Detect) tabs provide extensive information about your memory and memory settings. Under the SPD tab you can view individual information about the memory modules by slot.

Pros and Cons

Given that this software is completely free and provides a huge amount of information about both your CPU and other key parts of your system it’s easy to recommend this tool. I have used the program on multiple computers including several desktops and laptops and without experiencing any stability issues. CPU-Z supports nearly all hardware out there, although it’s possible that you’ll have to wait for an update if you have the very latest, bleeding edge system.

It’s a small download, completely free from unnecessary bloat, and very easy to use. If you have need for a feature-packed system information tool, I see no need why you shouldn’t head over to CPUID and download it right away.
