Short Review: Strong Business Measures with the Dell Latitude D630 Notebook

Gadget lovers who are on the lookout for laptops that have flashing lights and all that jazz might find the business-y laptop Dell latitude D630 somewhat ho-hum in terms of looks. But spending a lot of time tinkering with this laptop will bring about several surprising things.

Good Things at a Glance

The Dell Latitude D630 notebook has a case that is both slim and sturdy, thereby earning the nickname “Road Ready”. It comes with an Intel Centrino Processor and has new components such as nine cell battery that lasts for hours on end. These things make the Dell Latitude D630 notebook a lot impressive and contribute to its high performance scores, not to mention the fact that it currently holds the record for having the longest battery life for thin and light notebooks. Coupled with business features like security measures that are in the corporate levels and a WWAN option, the low price (compared to the Lenovo ThinkPad series) will surely astound those who are also on the lookout for a powerful and budget option. Others might also be tempted to make the switch from their older models to this new one.

Aesthetics

The Dell Latitude D630 notebook features a black interior and a gray exterior smoothly fits in most corporate environments. Aside from this, the magnesium alloy casing brings an extra level of sturdiness which is not commonly seen in most commercial laptops with a display hinge that has extra reinforcement. The standard nine cell battery puts the Dell Latitude D630 notebook at 5.8 pounds, which is bordering on the thin and light notebook category (at just .04 pounds heavier compared to the Lenovo Thinkpad). Add to this the AC adapter and you have for yourself a 6.7 pound laptop. Display-wise, the 14.1 inch widescreen LCD is very bright with a native resolution of 1440 x 900. This is almost as bright and sharp like most desktop replacements out there. Its matte finish ends up making it a winner and ideal for office productivity work. It is easy to work with three or four windows open. There is no Webcam or microphone in the case, but this is not too much of a loss unless you are the type who frequently uses Web conference tools. The keyboard of the Dell Latitude D630 notebook is standard, quite comfortable and fits the width of the laptop. There is a pointing stick that is quite on the nubby side, but if you do not like this you can also use the rectangular touch pad. A biometric security is also included in the Dell Latitude D630 notebook, thanks to the fingerprint reader that can be found between the buttons of the touchpad. Speakers on this system are a bit muddled when used at high levels, but three fourths of the way seems to be the best volume range for it.

There are many ports and connections included in this thin and light notebook, with one more extra USB port that we are used to and a serial port to boot. There is also a smart card slot and you will be pleased to know that there is an internal Trusted Platform Module.

Tech words explained

"Ultraportable"
This is the smallest and lightest version of the laptop. The overall focus of this laptop is having a light weight (less than 5lb), around 1" thick or less, with 9" to 12" displays. Due to the cost of making components smaller and fitting them into tighter spaces, the price is usually more expensive, ranging from $1000 for a very basic machine to $2000+ for mid-range features. Although the Ultraportable has respectable standard performance, it is usually inadequate for any graphics-intensive programs, due to the common use of Integrated Graphics. Ultraportables usually have longer battery life (~5+ hours) due to the common usage of lower voltage processors. Other than the smaller screen and integrated graphics, the other major tradeoff usually found with Ultraportables is a lack of an optical drive. These are usually not built into the laptop to save space and weight, but instead are often provided as an external option. Ultraportables are intended for highly mobile users who need basic computing power with ultimate portability.
