Short Review: Time for Tablet: Dell Latitude XT Laptop
For the longest time, Dell has staved off introducing a tablet pc option that is on the mainstream market. But in more recent times, Dell was able to notice some important thing that prompted their desire to be part of this – the tablet PC functionality coupled with Windows Vista and the Santa Rosa low-power platform of Intel, which are two features that finally made them introduce the Dell Latitude XT laptop.
Looks
The Dell Latitude XT laptop is a very impressive-looking piece of machinery. It has a slate-grey exterior casing that is also mirrored once you view the inside clamshell wrist rest. For the buttons and the key markings, silver and blue highlights are made. The overall visual design is highly appealing. A blue power light is found on the cover part that will indicate the power ‘on’ mode of the Dell Latitude XT laptop, as well as an icon for battery charging. The Dell Latitude XT laptop has a slim power supply that is almost the same size as a mobile phone (though a bit fatter and somewhat wider) and is quite easy to carry around. Charging times are also slower because of the 45W capacity as a form of trade-off.
The screen of the Dell Latitude XT laptop is 12 inches and has a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The screen is easy to view outdoors and has a brightness level of 400 nits. For tablet PC functionality, you can use the stylus or even your own fingers to access short options such as tapping the screen using your finger in order to open an application, among others. The great thing about the Dell Latitude XT laptop is that it does away with the resistive technology that makes it hard for users to exert pressure that will register on the digitizer and result in accurate commands. With the N-trig DuoSense technology of the Dell Latitude XT laptop, you have a ‘zero-pressure- finger sensing option that is able to know if you did or did not intend to make such a contact.
Weight and Dimensions
The Dell Latitude XT laptop weighs around 1.61 kilograms with its 4 cell battery attached. This is not overly uncomfortable or heavy to bring around for several periods of time even while in tablet mode. The entire system measures 29.7 cm x 21.8 cm x 2.5 cm thickness, thereby making the Dell Latitude XT laptop the thinnest 12 inch tablet pc out in the market today. It does not have an optical drive though (which is like, cheating already in terms of weight) but you can purchase an optical media bay for it if you desire.
Main Features
The Dell Latitude XT laptop is powered by the Intel 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo U7600 processor. It has 1 GB DDR2 RAM – a bit small for a tablet pc, but is nonetheless expandable for up to 3 GB. The preinstalled operating system on this unit is Windows Vista Business, which has an assembly of features that are ideal for power consumers and those who have more complicated needs for their computers. The graphics of the Dell Latitude XT laptop is ably handled by the ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 chipset. Storage wise, there is a disappointing 40 GB hard drive which spins at 4200 rpm. This is decidedly small for a supposedly powerful tablet pc, but thank goodness you have the option to upgrade the hard drive to up to three times the original size.
