Short Review: Dell Studio 15 Laptop: Middle-Range Done Well
Dell’s popularity in laptop sales is because of the highly successful Inspiron and XPS series, with the former being a budget range and the latter for those with more expensive tastes. But for the longest time, consumers have been asking for a middle ground series – with slightly higher than budget price like Inspiron and with a bit more class just like XPS. And to answer that call from their beloved customers, Dell came out with the Studio series – with the fifteen inch Studio 15 laptop to get a sense of middle ground laptop computing for a little over a thousand dollars.
Sleek Style
At first glance, it is easy to know that the Studio 15 got its sleek style inspiration from the Dell XPS series. Just like its more expensive brother, the Dell Studio 15 laptop has an elegantly tapered shape a slot loading optical drive with a rounded hinge. The difference between the two in terms of power is a couple hundred dollars, but if style is what you are after then the Dell Studio 15 laptop gives you the sense of sophistication you need. But while they look almost the same, the Dell Studio 15 laptop is one fourth thicker and a bit heavier than the XPS and replaces the metal accents with plastic ones. Customization is also available by way of colors and pretty graphic imprints and a neat little media remote control that pops out of the bay and is as slim and tiny as a credit card. The overall look of the Dell Studio 15 laptop is more angular, and the entire front gently slopes down at a somewhat sharp-ish angle. This laptop weighs in at around six pounds, so it is admittedly quite heavy to tote around with you. On the contrary, such weight and screen dimensions are on the lightweight side of the fifteen inch market.
Controls and Screen
Another neat thing about the Dell Studio 15 laptop is it has HDMI outputs among others. There are control buttons that are touch-sensitive control buttons for your convenience and are aligned conveniently across the keyboard. The 15.4 inch LED display is also a sight to behold, with a native resolution of 1440 x 900 – pretty standard stuff for laptops that are on the slightly higher end of the midsize laptop scale. Comparing it to the Inspiron series which only has 1280 x 800, you have a more comfortable viewing scale on the Dell Studio 15 laptop. The LED display, by the way, is one of the newer ones and emits better colors. White is very bright and colors are richly saturated. And the best part about this new improvement is that it has even less power consumption than the older models, which is always a good thing.
Processor
An Intel Core 2 Duo T1800 CPU with 2.2 GHz speed (and 320 GB to boot!) comes as the default performance processor of the Dell Studio 15 laptop. Thanks to this, it easily outperforms computing on most Inspiron series because these had slower 2.0 GHz speed and processors that were only Intel Core 2 Duo T5750. Opening and loading a whole bunch of programs and files were a breeze with the Dell Studio 15 laptop and there were hardly any lag times and long pauses. However, the so-so video card which is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD3400 at only a mere 256 MB is only enough for basic gaming. It appears that the Studio line, as it is aptly named, is best for creative work and not really for gaming purposes.
