Short Review: The Super Fast Dell Studio 17 Laptop
Dell attempts to get things in the mix when it comes to the Studio series of laptops, thanks to the introduction of the seventeen inch Dell Studio 17 laptop. A screen with this size will definitely impress a lot, but when it comes to the overall success of this new model a thorough analysis is necessary.
Build Quality
While the Dell of the olden days promoted tough and sturdy – albeit bulky – laptops, the Dell Studio 17 laptop is on the sleeker side of things. It is just a couple of inches bigger than the XPS M1530 but sliced off the aluminum parts and marketed it as a laptop with looks that are easy to customize. This alteration resulted in a desktop replacement-type of laptop that is certainly a looker. While you would hardly call it a mobile device (given that heck, it IS seventeen inches big) you can feel its solid construction and design without the overall effect seemingly bulky. It comes in a wide variety of juicy colors, too – Tangerine Orange, Plum Purple, Midnight Blue, Flamingo Pink, Spring Green, Ruby Red and for the traditionalists, Jet Black (interestingly enough, Dell didn’t offer a silver unit). The rubbery matte paint reminds one of the XPS cover and the graphite grey trim reminds us of the Inspiron series. It is indeed one solid laptop as there were was the absence of flex and creaks during inspection and handling.
Captivating Screen
The Dell Studio 17 laptop has seventeen inches of pure WXGA (1440 x 900) and WUXGA (1920 x 1200) glory. The display is very glossy and is nothing short of wonderful. There was a bit of uneven source of backlighting somewhere in the upper right hand part but was gone with a few tweaks from the screen resolution panel. Horizontal viewing angles of the Dell Studio 17 laptop are amazing. Peeking from the vertical angles are also good, surprisingly, but of course at some point the colors started to invert (we all can’t have it anyway) when tilted really far back.
Keyboard and Speakers
The keyboard on the Dell Studio 17 laptop is one of the best among seventeen inch notebooks. It is firm and only picked up a bit of flex that was actually hardly recognizable but overall the keyboard displayed great cushion. Typing is a pleasure and having a dedicated number pad is a wonderful add-on. A backlighting function is also added so typing in the dark is easier. The speakers of the Dell Studio 17 laptop are good but not that good. Audio seems to be well-rounded but can get just the slightest bit tinny when turned all the way up. With a great pair of headphones on, sound is almost perfect and the same might also be said with a pair of dedicated speakers.
Performance
The Dell Studio 17 laptop runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor, has 3 GB of RAM and comes with 320 GB of HDD. These alone are a performance maniac’s dream. Computing is fast and easy and there are hardly any lag times. HDD is generous and clearly meant to store large data files that run well with the reliably fast 3 GB RAM. Simply put, you will have no trouble with processing tasks on the Dell Studio 17 laptop.
