Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse

Published August 25, 2008 at 01:16:07 PM, by Thai Tan

What? Another mouse from Logitech? That's right. Logitech raises the bar this time by unleashing a better and more feature-rich mouse that combines both comfort and precision.

The Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks offers features and design elements that reflect on comfort, mobility, and precision. First, it's a wireless mouse that comes with the world's smallest USB wireless micro-receiver dubbed 'Plug-and-Forget Nano-receiver.' To increase its mobility, the VX Nano is equipped with an on/off switch to conserve battery life (Logitech advertises it will last 6 months). The VX Nano's precision is driven by laser sensor technology for smooth and more precise tracking on almost any surface.

Design
Package includes 2 AAA batteries, Desktop USB Extension Stand, Protective Carrying Pouch, and Plug-and-Forget Nano USB Receiver

Sleek, black, and modern are the best words to describe the VX Nano mouse. It sports a sexy ergonomic curve. There is a large arch on the mound to rest your palm that is raised, which adds some ergonomic comfort considering it's a rather small mouse to begin with.

For added comfort, the VX Nano comes with an ergonomic contour on the sides and rubber grips. The mouse is designed to be used with either the left or right hand and more importantly, it's more comfortable than a touchpad!

The compact design elements make this mouse perfect for travel. It measures 4.2' long, 0.8' from the front and extending 1.3' thick in the rear; and 2.4' wide, allowing the mouse to slip inside a pocket or laptop bag easily.

Laser Precision
Most high-end and modern notebook mice (even desktop mice too) are equipped with laser technology. Laser technology outperforms optical mice by delivering smoother cursor control and precision tracking on most surfaces.

Plug-and-Forget Nano-Receiver
The name says it all. Plug the world's smallest USB receiver into your notebook's USB port and forget about it. Take your notebook here, there, or everywhere without ever having to remove the USB receiver. The tiny USB receiver operates on the 2.4GHz frequency.

MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel and Controls
Derived from the Scroll Wheel technology built-in the VX Revolution and MX Revolution mice, the VX Nano's MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel enables you to navigate faster and with more precision. In hyper-mode, simply flick the scroll wheel and your pages will scroll quickly.

The mouse also possesses Forward/Back buttons and one-touch search button to instantly display results from search engine.

Power Management
Powered by two (2) AAA batteries (included), Logitech promises battery life will last 6 months. One of the ways to accomplish this is the mouse comes outfitted with an on/off switch to preserve battery life even longer. In addition, you can insert the USB receiver to shut off the mouse but that requires you to open up the compartment door.

The included Setpoint software informs you when it's almost time to replace batteries.

Performance
In judging most computing devices, how easy it is to setup and start using is essential. The Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Notebook mouse is ridiculously easy to setup. Simply insert the included batteries, switch the mouse on and plug-in the USB receiver. To utilize some pointing features, install the included Setpoint software and it gives you information on battery life, and adjusting game settings.

Comfort
Most laptop mice I've used tend to be uncomfortable due to their minute size and poor design arrangement. Although the Logitech VX Nano Laser Cordless mouse is small and compact similar to other laptop mice, its larger ergonomic arch made it comfortable to use but required some time getting used to. Why? Because I've been happily using its larger brother, the VX Revolution mouse, for months. The VX Revolution is exceedingly more comfortable in my opinion due to its larger size that fits in my palm more snugly. Users with larger hands might find the VX Nano (or most laptop mice in general) uncomfortable, especially after long term use but after getting used to it, you should be fine.

The side rubber grip makes a substantial difference in comfort compared to mice without any sort of rubber grips. The buttons exhibit minimal noise when clicking. The back/forward click buttons are positioned in a very odd place. The VX Revolution and MX Revolution mice positioned the forward/back buttons for your thumb, easily within reach. The VX Nano on the other hand makes it more challenging as it's positioned for your index finger, which I find less comfortable.
Real-usage

For navigating Windows and the Internet, the mouse performed extremely well. The cursor responded almost instantly regardless of how fast I shifted the mouse around. Since most icons, text, buttons, and links on my laptop screen are fairly small, I was able to direct the cursor to the desired link accurately almost every time. It tracks very precisely as advertised, thanks to the laser technology.

Conclusion

Pros:

  • Modern & sleek design
  • Smallest USB receiver ever
  • Fast response & accurate precision
  • Long battery life
  • Simple setup
  • On/off switch
  • Carrying pouch and Desktop Stand

Cons:

  • Odd position for Back/Forward button
  • Not as comfortable as VX Revolution Notebook Mouse

Recommendation
The Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser mouse for notebooks works well, looks great, but it's not the most comfortable mouse I've used. I have to praise Logitech for unleashing another impressive mouse, however. The tiny USB receiver is clever and will make mobile users' lives a little easier without them having to worry about removing the receiver when transporting. The MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel is one of the best scroll wheels out there, hands down. The only one thing I would like to see Logitech offer for an updated VX Nano is a better positioned Forward/Back button, higher contour for large hands and perhaps even offer a Bluetooth model.

This is certainly a nice replacement to your touchpad and other wireless laptop mice. Ultimately, it is designed to replace your touchpad: simply, seamlessly, and precisely. Highly Recommended!
