Short Review: Your Tiny Workhorse: The Asus Eee PC 900 Black Netbook
After the success of the Asus Eee PC lineup, Asus decided to take it one step further with the introduction of the Asus Eee PC 900 black netbook. The biggest complaint in the Asus 701 series would be, unsurprisingly, the seven inch screen that will leave you needing to scroll the pages horizontally to the see the entire thing. In this new offering, Asus addresses the horizontal scrolling issue with a new and improved 8.9 inch screen.
No More Horizontal Scrolling
The most refreshing thing about the Asus Eee PC 900 is of course the fact that you can now view most web pages and Word documents in full. The 8.9 inch screen is bright and crisp thanks to the maximum resolution of 1024 x 600 SGVA widescreen. Asus chopped off a couple of millimeters on the sides to make room for the 8.9 inch screen, so no more stereo side strips on this netbook.
Aesthetics
The black styling of the Asus Eee PC 900 comes in matte textures which is great for those who are fingerprint-prone. While the screen was a tremendous improvement, the same cannot really be said for the screen. It did adjust a bit in terms of measurement but there is still the “type and peck†feel to it. Nevertheless, keys are responsive with little flex and the track pad is still as good (although a tad bit cramped and the left and right clicks are still loud). An additional plus would be the sophisticated all-black color which makes this little number looks less like a child’s toy and more of a real mobile computing device.
Specs
Disregarding the Linux operating system for this netbook, the Asus Eee PC 900 functions on an Intel Celeron M 900 MHz processor that to accommodate the Linux-based operating system. Windows XP is still available in some issues of this particular netbook but with only 16 GB of solid state device we doubt that you can fully maximize it with a Windows one (especially since this one does not run on an Intel Atom processor which is specifically designed for netbooks). The Asus Eee PC 900 also has 1 GB of RAM installed, a minimum requirement for such specifications but nonetheless gets the job done.
Running the system at maximum operations was surprisingly easy and the entire unit maintained low temperatures. Unlike the Acer Aspire One series which could get tremendously hot, this 8.9 inch unit is as cool as a cucumber. In terms of battery life, you can get around two and a half hours worth of juice on this unit - which should be enough to complete your on-the-go computing tasks.
Bottom Line
With an improved screen, the Asus Eee PC 900 is a very refreshing improvement in the Asus Eee PC line. It did not sacrifice the entire size of the unit but significant improvements can be noted. With three USB drives and various connections that allow multimedia freedom, this netbook from Asus is something that you would not want to be without as you go through the hectic routine of your daily life.
