Short Review: Cool New Stuff with the Eee PC 901 20G Notebook
The Asus Eee PC 901 20 G netbook is one number higher than the original Asus Eee PC 900 netbook. This new version, for the same of difference and a sense of upgrade, now sports Bluetooth and a new processor. Aside from that, battery life was bumped up to very good levels and some interesting new features to boot. It is clear that with the Asus Eee PC 901 20 G netbook the company has been able to find a new spot that merges functionality, size and price. While some work could be done to improve the keyboard, the Asus Eee PC 901 20 G netbook nonetheless finds a good balance in a netbook better than the old seven inchers did.
Aesthetics
The Asus Eee PC 901 20 G netbook sports a glossy coat that is somewhat of a fingerprint magnet. Its chassis has been reworked such that it now has a tubular hinge and its body is slightly curvier. Weight-wise, the Asus Eee PC 901 20 G netbook is also heavier given that it is at 1.1 kg now – a fair trade off in order to have a better battery (besides, such a weight does not really make it too heavy to be toted around). Inside, the Asus Eee PC 901 20 G netbook has four shortcut buttons that will let you easily turn off the backlight, change the screen resolution, adjust the power profile (or otherwise known as the super hybrid engine) and launch one application (with Skype being the default one). Such buttons are all found above the area where the keyboard is, which did not experience any improvement as it is still the same as the one on the Asus Eee PC 900 netbook. You still employ the type and peck method with this one.
New Stuff
Highly welcomed is the addition of the integrated Bluetooth radio, which lets one do away with his or her Bluetooth dongle. Additionally, the Asus Eee PC 901 netbook has the Draft-N wireless card, the first of its kind on a netbook. This Draft-N wireless card is also capable of using any form of Wi-Fi standard out in the market. And there is also a 10/100 Ethernet port in the Asus Eee PC 901 netbook, which comes useful especially if you happen to be in a place where wireless broadband is a rarity. The netbook also has three USB ports along with an SDHC memory slot. It also offers 20 GB of solid state device for you to work with. This is not as big as other computing devices out there, but for something that will only serve as your surf and type machine this is already very good.
Speed and Performance
The 20 GB Asus Eee PC 901 netbook comes with a Linux operating system. Thanks to this simple operating system specifically designed for Asus, you have faster boot up times in less than twenty seconds. Clicking on your programs and waiting for them to load (such as Open Office) takes mere seconds as well. The speed and performance of the Asus Eee PC 901 netbook may also be because it comes with a Super Hybrid Engine that is able to throttle the CPU speed in order to achieve maximum performance in terms of battery life.
