HP's Business Netbook: The Mini 2140 - Short Review

The netbook market is all a-buzz with the introduction of the HP Mini 2140. While the computer manufacturer has the HP Mini 1000 a couple of months ago and the Mini Note 2133 last year, there is still enough room for one more player such as the HP Mini 2140.

The problem with the Mini 2140's older brother, the Mini-Note 2133, is that it came with the underpowered Via C7-M which premeditated its fall in the netbook category as a powerful contender. HP soon realized its mistake and immediately went to work on creating a netbook similar to the looks and styling of the Mini-Note 2133 but has a better processor this time.

Elegant Design

Style-wise, the HP Mini 2140 takes on the brushed-metal chassis of the Mini-Note 2133. It is elegant and resembles that of a high tech gizmo one might find in a home of the future - a far cry from the black plastic housing found in the HP Mini 1000. It keeps the elegance in an effort to maintain the business line of netbooks, and the $499 Mini 2140 is two hundred dollars more expensive than its cousin the Mini 1000. The keyboard is still the same, being almost full sized and maximizes the horizontal real estate of the laptop.

Great Updates

In an effort to make the Mini 2140 a radical update from its predecessor, it packs a punch in terms of having the following:

* Updated Intel Atom CPU (with matching accelerometer designed for the hard drive)
* ExpressCard/54 slot - which is a netbook first (a contender, the Lenovo s10, also has an Express Card albeit 34 and not 54).

With these two significant changes, the HP Mini Note is a favorite among netbook-toting execs whose budget is in the less than five hundred dollar range.

Weight Issues

Being a netbook, the HP Mini 2140 is supposed to banner the “bring anywhere” philosophy espoused by those who had originally conceptualized this line of mobile computers. However, there is a significant difference in terms of weight between the Mini 1000 and the Mini-Note 2140 due to the elegant aluminum case which makes the entire unit half a pound heavier than its cousin the Mini 1000. But in terms of durability, there might be a trade off as the aluminum finish provides extra hardiness to the Mini 2140 compared to the plastic Mini 1000.

Touchpad

The unusually shaped touchpad has left and right mouse buttons found on separate left and right sides instead of the bottom part. Because of this, there is a smaller space for palm rest and it can get a bit disconcerting clicking on the mouse from the sides instead of the bottom.

Display

The HP Mini 2140 has 10.1 inch LED display which has a peculiar 1024x576 resolution (several pixels shy of usual resolutions at 1024x600). It is hardly noticeable, though. The display is nice and crisp and has no problem being out in direct sunlight.

Conclusion

Overall, the Mini 2140 is a nice upgrade from the Mini-Note 2133. With a better processor and Express Card, one can say that HP has truly redeemed itself in the netbook market.
