Toshiba Portege M750-S7202: Entering the Tablet PC Market - Short Review

More and more touch-enabled computing devices are catching the attention of the general consumer market nowadays, as technology and innovation dictates that this is the way to go. Because tablet consuming is fast-gaining reception in these times, it is no wonder that laptop manufacturers are trying their best to come up with their own offerings, too. Toshiba ups the ante on the competition for the tablet market with the Toshiba Portege M750-S7202 device.

Chubby Buddy

Despite the Toshiba Portege M750-S7202 being a 12.1 inch convertible tablet computer, it is still considered bulky by most. The swivel latch is chunky (which adds to its weight and bulk) and the overall unit is round on the edges. Being a tablet pc the extra fat could have been acceptable, but not with the presence of thinner 12 inch tablet computers around such as the HP TX2000 tablet pc. Nevertheless, this cubby buddy in a “thin is in” world can still pack a lot of punch when you start talking about its ability to keep stable. One, there is no chance of hinge failure because of the extra protection against spills, drops and knocks. This is all thanks to the magnesium alloy shell and the shock-absorbing chassis. Furthermore, the unit also boasts of a mounted hard-drive and an LCD panel mount as well, plus a spill- resistant keyboard to boot. In case of the laptop making its way to the ground from a height, there is a 3D accelerometer that can part the Toshiba Portege M750-S7202’s 160 GB and 7200 rpm drive heads.

Performance

The Toshiba Portege M750-S7202 runs on 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 CPU processor and 2 GB of RAM. Performance- wise, this is quite reasonable even if these specs are not enough to entice the most hard-core of gamers. At the price of $1,799, it’s pretty expensive but you get all the hardiness that should come with a tablet pc that has moving parts that need protection

Touch Mode

The Toshiba Portege M750-S7202 is equipped with a dual-mode type of digitizer. This is quite capable of responding not just to the more traditional active stylus, but also to finger-touches as well. So even if you lose your pen, you can still work the tablet using your fingers. With the digitizer layer present, you could probably expect that the LCD is not as crisp as most – but in the realm of tablet pc computing the resolution is quite satisfying already. Swiveling the laptop in tablet mode will require a bit of elbow grease, as the hinge can be quite tough. In truth, it is better to experience some sort of struggle with a tough hinge than having a smoothly swiveling one that might get loose after some time. With the tough hinge present in the Toshiba Portege M750-S7202, you can be sure that your tablet is one tough cookie which you will use for years to come.

Conclusion

The Toshiba Portege M750-S7202 proves that the tablet computing range is still ripe for the picking and that many new contenders are out to catch your attention. Perhaps the best aspect of this unit from Toshiba is the extra attention to protection of moving parts and internal fixtures, this will surely give its consumers a sense of value for money even at the steep price of $1,799.
